• Ethernet. Runs over coaxial cables at high speed. Most common method of interconnecting computers in the same building.

• FDDI. Runs over fiber optic cables at very high speeds. Often used to connect buildings or cities together.

• ATM. An emerging network technology designed to support video and audio as well as ordinary data.

IDT has many products that are used in these and other network technologies, especially for Ethernet switches, hubs, and routers - devices used to interconnect one network with another one and route traffic correctly between the source and destination.

IDT's newest products for this market are related to the ATM networks. ATM promises to offer many advantages over traditional network technologies, especially for time-dependent data like real-time video and audio. ATM also allows the available capacity of a network to be divided up among many users according to their needs, so an entire "channel" doesn't get used up by a user transferring only a small amount of data, and users with large amounts of information can get as much bandwidth as they need.
